Why Get Tested for ADHD as an Adult?

Many adults go years without realizing that ADHD may be influencing how they work, relate, and navigate daily life. Testing can help you:

Which Evaluation Path is Right for Me?

At Bloom, we offer two distinct pathways for evaluation: our specialized Adult ADHD Clinic and Comprehensive Psychological Testing.

Our goal is to match you with the evaluation that best fits your history and current symptoms. While the ADHD Clinic offers a more streamlined process, it is designed for specific clinical presentations. Choosing the right path ensures you get the most accurate answers and the most effective treatment plan.

Here is a guide to help you decide which option is the best fit for you:

Option 1: The Focused ADHD Assessment

Part of our Adult ADHD Clinic

This streamlined evaluation is designed for adults who need answers specifically regarding attention and executive functioning. This path is appropriate for you if:

  • You have a singular concern: Your primary struggles are related to focus, attention, organization, or procrastination, and you do not have other significant mental health concerns.

  • OR, you are already in treatment: You have a history of anxiety or depression, but you are currently working with a therapist or taking medication, and those conditions are relatively managed—yet you suspect there is still an underlying attention issue.

  • You aren’t experiencing symptoms associated with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or any other serious mental health condition.

Option 2: Comprehensive Psychological Evaluation

Our traditional, in-depth testing process

This broader evaluation looks at the "whole person" to untangle complex symptoms. This path is appropriate for you if:

  • You have complex or unclear symptoms: You are experiencing a mix of mood instability, anxiety, and attention issues, and you aren’t sure where one ends and the other begins.

  • You have a history of trauma: Past trauma can mimic ADHD symptoms. A comprehensive evaluation allows us to differentiate between a neurodevelopmental disorder and a trauma response.

  • You are currently untreated: If you have significant symptoms of depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders and are not currently in therapy or on medication, we need the comprehensive view to ensure we don't miss a primary diagnosis.

A Note on Transparency

To ensure you receive the best possible care, please be open with us about your full mental health history during scheduling.

If a patient has complex, untreated co-occurring conditions (like severe anxiety or trauma), the Focused Assessment may not provide enough data for an accurate diagnosis. Helping us place you in the right "lane" from the start ensures your evaluation results in meaningful, actionable recommendations.

Self-Pay (The Flexible Path)

Perfect for those seeking the fastest possible answers, with the freedom to choose your pace.

How It Works

We offer two convenient pathways for your evaluation based on how you plan to pay.

  • The "All-in-One" Day: For maximum efficiency, you can complete your Clinical Interview, Testing, and Feedback session all in a single visit. Please note we require payment in full for this option one week before your appointment date.

  • Immediate Answers: Discuss your results with your psychologist before you leave the office.

  • Flexible Scheduling: Prefer to meet your provider first? You also have the option to schedule your Clinical Interview separately, giving you time to meet your psychologist and review your testing plan before committing to the testing day.

The Insurance-Based Process

Designed to maximize your benefits while maintaining a streamlined timeline.

  • Step 1: Clinical Interview: You will meet with your provider for an initial intake appointment to review your history and needs.

  • Step 2: The Plan: Following your interview, you will receive a transparent Testing Plan detailing the recommended tests and costs. Once you sign this plan, we schedule your testing day.

  • Step 3: Testing & Feedback Day: Return for a single visit to complete your testing and receive your feedback and results immediately afterward.

Important Scheduling Note: To ensure your testing day runs smoothly and is reserved exclusively for you, we ask that all clients pay in full one week prior to your testing appointment.

Testing for Adults

  • Many adults move through life knowing something isn't quite right with their attention, memory, or relationships without understanding what exactly has made life a struggle. Cognitive testing can answer many questions about how you process information, such as whether your verbal or nonverbal skills are better developed. Our evaluation process also identifies strengths and weaknesses in your executive functioning, which includes working memory, planning, organization, attention, focus, flexibility in thinking, and problem solving. Gaining an understanding of how your brain functions can assist you in strategically changing aspects of daily life to emphasize strengths and overcome weaknesses.

Personality and emotional/behavioral testing creates a valuable framework for understanding how you relate to others, to yourself, and to the world, as well as determining how these dynamics impact your daily life, including social, work, and family interactions. Such information can be especially helpful for therapists who can use personality data to formulate more individualized and specific treatment plans to optimize your experience in therapy and improve outcomes.

All of these questions can be addressed through a comprehensive evaluation with Dr. Tarbox or Dr. Ridel.

  • • Is my diagnosis correct?

    • My psychiatrist and I are struggling to find the right medication. Are we treating the correct underlying disorder?

    • Are there problems with my attention that have been making life such a struggle?

    • My therapist and I need some guidance about treatment goals. Can testing uncover ways to make therapy more effective?

All of these questions can be addressed through a comprehensive evaluation with Dr. Tarbox or Dr. Ridel.

General Testing Questions

  • The first step in the evaluation process is an intake appointment, which has a set fee (see current rates here). During this appointment, your psychologist will learn about your concerns, gather background information, and recommend a personalized testing plan. Because every evaluation is tailored to the individual, the total cost of testing varies depending on the assessments needed.

You will have the opportunity to review your psychologist’s recommended testing plan—including the estimated total cost—before deciding whether to move forward. At the time of scheduling, you are only committing to the intake appointment; no testing fees are due until you approve the plan and schedule your testing session.

The total cost of testing typically ranges between $2,000 and $4,250. Depending on your insurance plan, we are often able to bill about half of this cost to insurance. However, insurance does not cover all components of a comprehensive evaluation. Every evaluation will have a minimum self-pay cost of $855.

  • Our evaluations are known throughout the community to be high quality, detailed, and comprehensive. That’s why we regularly receive referrals for psychological testing from physicians representing a variety of specialties, including pediatrics, neurology, and psychiatry; school psychologists and counselors; teachers; and professional tutors. Just as important to us are the referrals we receive from families we’ve worked with who have recommended us to their friends and family. We strive to make psychological testing a positive and hopeful process.

  • A ROAD MAP

Our testing reports begin where others end: diagnosis. What distinguishes a Bloom evaluation is the wealth of information that follows the diagnostic section. Based on the client’s pattern of strengths and weaknesses, we will recommend specific interventions and accommodations to implement in the home and in school/work settings. These accommodations aim to help the client fully access the educational curriculum and perform to the best of her/his ability. At home, our recommendations address concerns that are making everyday life more stressful and challenging, with the goal of promoting a positive, calm family atmosphere. If you’re a parent who has sought out testing for your child, we’ll let you know what you can do to help your child meet her/his potential, and how to modify aspects of your parenting style given your child’s needs. Essentially, our evaluations provide a road map to guide you and your family.

  • To schedule an initial intake appointment to discuss testing with Dr. Tarbox or Dr. Ridel, please follow the steps to schedule a New Client Appointment here.

  • Dr. Tarbox is paneled with Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, and Community/ProHealth.

Dr. Ridel is paneled with Anthem.

We do not accept Medicaid, Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP), Hoosier Healthwise, Hoosier Care Connect, or Indiana PathWays for Aging plans.

  • When our psychologists join an insurance panel, they sign a contract agreeing to abide by their policies. The testing codes we use at Bloom only apply to tests that are administered in our office. Therefore, we cannot bill the rating scales to insurance. The rating scales are forms you’ll complete to provide detailed information regarding symptoms in the home, school, and/or work settings; these are completed online.

Additionally, if there are concerns related to learning that require academic achievement testing, that portion of testing is self-pay as well. It’s considered educational in nature, and it doesn’t meet medical necessity criteria. When we know something isn’t covered by insurance, it would be unethical to submit those charges.

  • We require 48 hours' notice to reschedule or cancel a testing appointment. If you reschedule or cancel with less than 48 hours' notice, you will owe a late cancellation fee equal to 25% of your total testing fee. This fee is not covered by insurance.

  • At Bloom, we’ve thoughtfully designed our space to be modern, calm, and comfortable for children, teens, and adults. Whether you’re visiting for testing or an intake appointment for you or your child, we want you to feel at ease.
